Aarohanwhere knowledge is free

The community outreach program at Aarohan aims at taking quality education to children not in school and school children in underserved rural areas and slums.

Goals:
*To introduce literacy programs to children not in school
*To integrate them into the school system
*To provide them with continued support and guidance through their school years
*To provide comprehensive education to school going children by augmenting the existing curriculum
*To provide vocational training and employment assistance as needed

For  the year, 2005-2006, Aarohan will implement its outreach program in  9 villages and 1 slum area in  Guwahati with a total of 550 children.

Each area will have a designated Aarohan community worker/teacher to implement the following programs:

  •   literacy programs for children out of school
  • bridge courses to help integrate these children to the appropriate school grade
  • after school educational programs
  • libraries
  • competitive events, games and sports
  • music, arts and drama
  • basic health care

Special focus on adolescent girls aged 10 to 16 years:

  • health education, including reproductive health
  • domestic skills, housekeeping
  • hygiene and sanitation
  • empowerment and legal issues
  • entrepreneurial skills for achievement of self esteem  and self dependence

An intensive effort is  being  undertaken to generate community involvement to support their children’s education – to instill the belief in parents and teachers that the time to invest in our children’s education is now and they must play the leading role in the process. Their active participation is an integral part of all programs.

Volunteers will be identified from within the community, and be trained to initiate and implement all programs with the goal that each area will be able to achieve selfsufficiency and operate Aarohan programs independently.
