The Dilemma 

•High drop-out rates – this is the  single biggest problem that we are faced with today.  The drop-out rate in primary schools across the nation is 40.3% . In the northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya, it is much higher  and GROWING

•Illiteracy – a third of Indians are illiterate

•Lack of adequate number of accessible schools – one fourth of all out of school primary school children live in India

•Poor quality of education provided in the public school system

•Lack of basic amenities in the schools such as drinking water, toilets, blackboards

•Lack of adequate teachers

•Prohibitive costs associated with schooling

•Huge gender differences 

*Poor quality of education
*Overcrowding in schools
*Cost of supplies and tuition
*Lack of basic amenities in schools
*parental perception that the children do not learn relevant  life skills in schools incite parents to withdraw their children from school.
 

The result :
A 60 million strong workforce of child laborers -
the largest in the world.
